The Trendspotter: May 2025
We’re back again with your monthly dose of must-know news, The Trendspotter! This content series features monthly roundups of the newest and hottest businesses (namely, restaurants, bars, and then some!) around RVA.
When you hear about May flowers, this is what they’re talking about.
Julio’s Bagel Shop
What it is: The latest bagel shop to hit the scene
Why we love it: Richmond is a bonafide beer and coffee scene, but in recent months, it seems like it’s going through a bagel boom — and we love to see it. Julio’s comes to us from the brains behind Pizza Bones, and if that’s any indication of its deliciousness, we’ll be looking for an excuse to stop by every week. The spot has bagels, spreads, and sammies, including its Pizza Bagel.
Where to find it: 114 W Brookland Park Blvd (Northside)
Chimbo Sandwich Shoppe
What it is: Your go-to spot for a thicc sandwich
Why we love it: Chimbo Sandwich Shoppe is the next concept in local restauranteur Alexa Schett’s portfolio, and TG for that. She’s brought Liberty Public House and Riverbend Roastery into our lives, so we can pretty much guarantee this spot is also a must-try. While each menu item might seem steep in price, they each also seem steep in fixin’s, or as the menu itself says, “all our sandwiches are made to feed.” Catch us ASAP trying The Fried Chokes (battered and deep fried artichoke hearts, lemon garlic aioli, chopped romaine, and sun-dried tomatoes).
Where to find it: 2709 E Marshall St (Church Hill)
Nouveau Provisions
What it is: A quintessential date spot, serving wine and Neapolitan pizza in an intimate setting
Why we love it: We’re not about to pooh-pooh any place offering us pizza, but Nouveau Provisions — from the folks at Nouveau Farms — is offering that, *plus* wine, dessert from JC Desserts, and coffee. What’s not to love, really?
Where to find it: 3423 W Cary St (Carytown)
Seashell
What it is: A fish shack pop-up from Chef Brittanny Anderson
Why we love it: Chef Brittanny Anderson never misses, and she seems to be continuing that trend with this seafood concept that’ll pop up on Brenner Pass’s patio every other Saturday. Embrace summer with eats like oyster shooters, ceviches, crudo, crab, and lobster.
Where to find it: 3200 Rockbridge St #100 (Scott’s Addition)
HistoryFest
What it is: A festival-meets-conference for history buffs, happening all day Saturday, May 17
Why we love it: Richmond’s cup runneth over with history and festivals, and this new event combines both. Virginia Museum of History & Culture is putting on this education celebration featuring 15 multi-sensory presentations covering musical and art revolutions, travel, food culture, American presidents, and generation-defining events.
Where to find it: 428 N Arthur Ashe Blvd (Museum District)
