The Power of Poison

  • Science Museum of Virginia (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Sometimes lethal, sometimes lifesaving, always paradoxical. From a defense against predators to a source of magical strength, poison takes on many different forms. You’ll be infected with new-found knowledge when you explore poison’s role in nature, legend, history and human health.

The Power of Poison features theatrical dioramas, interactive modules, engaging media presentations and hands-on experiences. Wander through Colombia’s Chocó Forest, turn the virtual pages of an enchanted book on toxic plants, investigate evidence to solve poisoning mysteries, hear dramatic stories of forensic detection and explore zombie-making animal/plant duos. Separate fascinating facts from fantastical fiction while navigating toxic twists and turns!

In conjunction with “The Power of Poison,” the Science Museum will feature hands-on programming, demonstrations and events throughout the exhibition’s tenure. Guests can build a 3D mushroom in the Art Lab, learn about Virginia’s venomous snakes, collect some tips to identify poisonous plants and take a look at how the compounds plants produce for protection can become the flavors people enjoy — in the right dosage.

The presence of “The Power of Poison” will make the Science Museum’s annual Science After Dark: Spooky Science (October 17) all the more frighteningly fun. Dr. Michelle Peace will also speak at Sunrise Science (November 7) about the forensic toxicology of diapers, bugs and vapes. More events and experiences will be announced throughout the fall and winter

The Power of Poison is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (amnh.org).

This touring exhibition will be on display October 4—April 19, 2026.

RVA Community Makers 2026

Experience VMFA’s RVA Community Makers 2026 installation. Led by artist Hamilton Glass, this annual public artmaking project celebrates community leaders, beginning with a community unveiling during Black History Month. Glass’s 2026 art installation will depict this year’s honorees in vivid vinyl and latex painted portraits. His work will be on view in the Cochrane Atrium from February 12 through March 29.

RVA Community Makers 2026 honors three storytellers, community advocates and artists who share the impacts, histories, and voices of an enduring people. They were chosen because they embody and, through their work, celebrate the strength, persistence, culture, and beauty of the Black diaspora. This year’s theme, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” is inspired by the VMFA exhibition Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys

Now in its eighth year, RVA Community Makers was created by VMFA and Glass, who collaborate with artists, educators, business leaders, historians, community organizers, and others to celebrate individuals or groups for their positive impacts on the greater Richmond community.

RVA Community Makers 2026 is in partnership with the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia.

“Seeing Differently: Drawing What You Actually See” with Artist Agnes Grochulska
Wednesday, March 18th, 2026 | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

In this hands-on, artist-led workshop, participants will explore powerful visual exercises that shift the brain from habitual, symbolic thinking to true observation. Through guided drawing activities, short demonstrations, and moments of reflection, you’ll learn to quiet analytical judgment and strengthen the perceptual skills that lead to more accurate, confident drawing.

Rather than focusing on style or perfection, this workshop trains the foundations of realistic seeing: edges, negative space, proportion, light and shadow, and how the whole image fits together. These skills benefit anyone who wants to draw more realistically — whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or refining an existing practice.

Tickets ($75) include drawing materials, wine & light refreshments.

Mini Cozy Con with Olivia Blacke and Mollie Ann Cox

Come chat cozy mystery with two returning favorites! Olivia Blacke and Mollie Ann Cox with be in conversation about their two newest.

About the Books:

Ruby Young is slowly adjusting to her new life in Boston. A big part of that is her unexpected roommate—the ghost of the woman who lived there before. For Cordelia Graves, she may no longer be breathing, but it’s still her apartment and Ruby is the somewhat unwanted houseguest. They’re both happy they’ve managed to become friends, which is a miracle considering they struggle to communicate with each other. Cordelia even set Ruby up with her old job.

When Ruby discovers the body of a delivery guy at work, the new life she’s been building hangs in the balance. The last time Cordelia dragged Ruby into a murder investigation, it was almost two ghosts living in the apartment, not one. Determined to protect Ruby, Cordelia tries to shield her from the investigation, but Ruby has other ideas. It will take both of them working together to navigate the fine line between the dead and the living to bring a killer to light.

It’s December 1805, and Eliza Hamilton is determined to seek justice. One young woman is dead, another has vanished—both residents of a house where Eliza’s friend, Alice, lives among other craftswomen struggling to survive in a city unforgiving toward widows and orphans.

With no help from the constabulary because the young woman’s body was found in a bad part of town–and was dressed as a man–Eliza vows to protect the women and uncover the truth. She suspects a connection between the death and the disappearance, especially given that the young lady who disappeared went missing while searching for the woman who was later found dead.

As Eliza traces their last known steps, she unearths a hidden world of dangerous secrets lurking beneath the city—secrets that could tear apart everything she holds dear.

This pulse-racing historical mystery will intrigue and delight anyone fascinated by the Founding Fathers and feminist history.

About the Authors:
Olivia Blacke (she/her) is the Anthony Award-winning author of the Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries, as well as the cozy Record Shop Mysteries and the Brooklyn Murder Mysteries. She had her first ghost encounter when she was five, but wasn’t involved with an active crime scene until much later, when she accidentally stepped into a chalk outline on a Manhattan sidewalk. Armed with a Criminology degree, she channels her love of the supernatural and passion for writing into darkly humorous supernatural mysteries. She wants to be a unicorn when she grows up.

Mollie Ann Cox writes cozy mysteries with edge and traditional mysteries with heart. She's the author of several bestselling mystery series, also writing under the pen names Maggie Blackburn and Mollie Cox Bryan. Her books have been selected as finalists for an Agatha Award and a Daphne du Maurier Award and as a Top 10 Beach Reads by Woman's World. The Eliza Hamilton series is the first where she combines her passions of history and mystery.

Crossroads Art Center invites artists to redefine creativity and sustainability in “Make It New Again!”, an exhibition celebrating artwork made from recycled, reclaimed, repurposed, or up-cycled materials. This show challenges artists to look at the overlooked—discarded objects, found materials, industrial scraps, vintage treasures—and transform them into something visually compelling, thought-provoking, and entirely new.

From sculpted assemblage to mixed media, collage, fiber, metal, plastics, paper, wood, and beyond, we welcome works that breathe new life into old materials. Whether your piece is made entirely from recycled elements or powerfully incorporates them as a significant component, we want to showcase how artists turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

“We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth”

  • Virginia Museum of History & Culture (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About the Exhibition
Stories of opportunity, community and resilience are brought to life at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) in “We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth,” an exhibition that brings together more than 100 voices speaking to distinct perspectives on the immigrant experience of Virginians. A signature component of the Museum’s multi-year slate of exhibitions, programs and activations commemorating the 250th anniversary of America, “We The People” presents the deeply personal narratives of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity and refuge by immigrating to the United States.

One of the leading catalysts for semiquincentennial commemorations in Virginia and beyond, VMHC has played a key role in shaping the Commonwealth’s 250th anniversary efforts. The Museum was among the first institutions to convene statewide history leaders and encouraged Virginia’s General Assembly to found the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250). In July 2023, VMHC announced a comprehensive program for the anniversary, including two marquee exhibitions, “We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth” and “Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation,” which opened in March 2025 as the first major exhibition in the nation to mark the milestone anniversary.

FREE and exlusive for Richmond Flying Squirrels Season Members

CarMax Park will host Taking Flight Festival presented by 804Live, the first concert at the new multi-use entertainment venue, on Thursday, March 26, featuring Big Daddy Kane, Tone Loc, Steve Earle and Reckless Kelly.

Tickets for the concert will be distributed exclusively to Richmond Flying Squirrels Season Membership Holders. Information about Flying Squirrels Season Memberships is available at SquirrelsBaseball.com.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on March 26. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

“We couldn’t be more excited to officially open CarMax Park with the Taking Flight Festival and welcome fans to experience this incredible new venue for the first time,” said Lou DiBella, Managing General Partner of the Richmond Flying Squirrels. “This concert is just the beginning of what CarMax Park will bring to the Richmond community, and we’re especially thrilled to offer this exclusive opportunity to our Season Membership Holders. Events like this are one of the many ways CarMax Park will deliver unforgettable experiences to Richmond.”

Big Daddy Kane is a GRAMMY Award-winning rapper and actor who started his career in 1986 as a member of the rap group the Juice Crew. A Brooklyn, New York M.C. who undisputedly defined the term “lyricist” in the world of hip-hop by introducing a lyrical ingenuity to a genre that had not yet been heard before, Big Daddy Kane proved that he was not only a dynamic M.C., but demonstrated his appeal by combining innovative live performances with choreography, theatrics and a tailored look that have become his trademarks. BDK revolutionized hip-hop fashion and the way hip-hop shows were and are performed.

Tone Loc soared from obscurity into pop stardom in 1989 when his hoarse voice and unmistakable delivery made the song "Wild Thing" (using a sample from Van Halen's "Jamie's Cryin'") a massive hit winning GRAMMYs and countless other awards. The song “Wild Thing” was co-written by Marvin Young, better known as Young MC, as was the second single smash, "Funky Cold Medina." The album "Loc-ed After Dark" became the second rap release ever to top the pop charts and one of the most popular of all time.

Steve Earle is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. A protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his record, “Guitar Town,” which shot to number one on the country charts and is now regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. Subsequent releases like “The Revolution Starts...Now” (2004), “Washington Square Serenade” (2007) and “TOWNES” (2009) received GRAMMY Awards.

Reckless Kelly has tied Austin rock and cowboy poetry together seamlessly for more than 25 years, evolving from a barnstorming Idaho outfit into a coast-to-coast torchbearer for independent Americana. Over more than two decades, the band has released 10 studio albums and two live albums, toured internationally, and established the annual Braun Brothers Reunion festival as a three-day cultural bellwether for Challis, Idaho. Perhaps most importantly, they have earned the enduring respect of their musical peers across the Texas, Red Dirt, and wider Americana landscapes.

Presented by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and the Center for Cultural Vibrancy, join us for a celebration of the richness of artistic traditions brought to Virginia by recent immigrants and refugees.

Experience music, dance, food, visual arts, and ceremonies performed by master artists from around the world now living in the Commonwealth; traditions that were born and nurtured over centuries in places like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Cambodia; and that are now thriving here. The power and extraordinary range of cultural traditions that immigrants and refugees bring with them, enriching the Commonwealth in many ways, will be on full display.

This showcase event is being presented as a complement to the VMHC’s new exhibition, We the People: The World in Our Commonwealth, which explores the history and stories of immigration in Virginia from the founding of the United States until the present day.

Artists include:

  • A ceremony of welcome performed in Quechua, an indigenous language of the Andes, by Senora Julia Garcia.

  • Music from Vietnam by the Nguyen Family Band which has performed in major venues throughout the U.S. and abroad; and by Phuong Nguyen a master of the Dan Bau, a single-stringed instrument that has often been called “the voice of Vietnam.”

  • Mongolian music and dance featuring Gankhuyag (GanNa) Natsag who currently serves as Mongolia’s Cultural Envoy; a display of masks produced by GanNa for use in traditional Tsam Buddhist ceremonies; and a performance by his daughter Uyanga, a master of the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle) and one of Mongolia’s most respected musicians.

  • An installation of Alfombra by internationally acclaimed artist Ubaldo Sanchez. Alfombra is a tradition native to the highlands of Guatemala in which colored rice, dried beans, sawdust, flowers, and other materials are arranged to create intricately designed carpets expressing spiritual themes. Marimba Maya AWAL will perform music with roots in ancient Mayan culture, featuring handmade gourd and double keyboard Marimbas, turtle shell, and traditional wooden drums.

  • Dance traditions from the Andes of Bolivia including Suri-Sikuri, an “ostrich dance” with elaborate feather crowns and the music of handmade Zamponas (pan-pipes); and Tinkus, a dance simulating combat in which the dancers draw energy from Mother Earth (Pachamama); performed by the Northern Virginia-based Tradiciones Bolivianos.

  • Performance of Cambodian dance and a display of handmade dance costumes by 2024 National Heritage Fellowship recipient, Sochietah Ung.

  • An Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony performed by Richmond resident Lemlem Gebray and her twin daughters Datta and Akeza Seyoum.

Profs & Pints Richmond: Cinderella's Story

(Talk rescheduled from January 25th, when it was postponed in response to inclement weather.)

Profs and Pints Richmond presents: “Cinderella’s Story,” on the origins and evolution of a fairytale heroine and cultural icon, with Kitty Maynard, former professor of French at Washington College, director of the Faculty Hub at the University of Richmond, and scholar of early modern France.

Cinderella is arguably the most famous fairy tale of our time, its elements feeling so familiar that they seem to express universal experiences and human values. But while Cinderella might seem timeless, the version of her known to us today has a very specific origin in seventeenth-century France and the political climate of that time. Moreover, she has changed dramatically over the centuries to appeal to new audiences.

Get to know the plucky young heroine whose tale has become part of our everyday culture and language by coming to Profs and Pints at Triple Crossing-Fulton, where lifelong learners have a ball.

Dr. Kitty Maynard will take us back to the court of Louis XIV, where courtier Charles Perrault wrote Cinderella in 1697 to offer real lessons to a real audience consisting of fellow courtiers rather than children. You’ll learn how French society at that time had a particular version of social mobility in which its aristocratic structure allowed the advancement of meritorious and industrious male members of the bourgeoisie but limited female agency to marriage.

We’ll look at how one of Perrault's contemporaries, Madame d'Aulnoy, came up with a very different take on a Cinderella story, in which Cinderella found her man and symbolically proposed to him. We’ll touch upon the Brothers Grimm's dark version of the tale and discuss how Cinderella has been pliable enough to stretch into other eras because basic tropes in her story appeal to our love of underdogs and sense of justice.

When Walt Disney brought Cinderella to the screen in 1950, he transformed Perrault’s version dramatically to reflect the ideals and expectations of a postwar American audience and the ethos of the American Dream. You’ll get to know the Disneyfied version of her, as well as those in Dina Goldstein's “Fallen Princesses” photo series and in a smattering of recent remakes of Cinderella such as Ever After, the live-action Cinderella, and comedic takes like Cinderfella.

Among the questions Dr. Maynard will tackle: Where does Cinderella really come from? And what makes her story so compelling to us today?

Don’t worry. The talk will end long before midnight. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

The Case of the Murdered Muckraker with Rob Osler

Historical mystery lovers, this is for you! Rob will be chatting with Fountain Friend John Copenhaver in the store about his latest mystery.

About the Book:

Chicago, 1898. In the midst of the Progressive Era, twenty-one-year-old junior detective Harriet Morrow is determined to prove she’s more than a lucky hire as the Prescott Agency’s first woman operative. But her latest challenge—a murder case steeped in scandal—could become a deadly setback . . .

As the Windy City thaws from a harsh winter, Harriet Morrow finds herself doubting her investigative skills when she’s assigned to solve a high-stakes murder case well above her pay grade. And there’s also a catch. Harriet must somehow blend in as an “unremarkable” young woman—one who feels confident in skirts, not men’s clothing—on a quest to infiltrate the immigrant community at the center of the grisly crime . . .

The mystery has more twists and turns than her morning bike commute, with a muckraker found murdered in a southside tenement building after obtaining evidence of a powerful politician’s corruption. While Harriet gains the trust of the tenement’s women residents to gather clues, the undercover mission reveals an innocent mother might have been framed for the crime—and exposes ties to another violent death . . .

Harriet soon realizes she has few allies as new dangers explode around her. Enlisting the help of Matthew McCabe, her only true confidante at the agency, and growing more protective of her budding relationship with the lovely Barbara Wozniak, Harriet will need to survive rising threats to assert her place in a world that’s quick to dismiss her—and out a killer who’s always one step ahead . . .

Jonathan Grave and his Security Solutions team manage to turn the tables when the assassins come for them. But the ultimate attack will strike deep at the heart of what’s best about American values.

Historic Garden Week
Apr

to Apr 25

Historic Garden Week

The Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week offers a unique opportunity during the nation’s 250th anniversary to visit many properties linked to early Virginians who helped shape American history. From Washington to Jefferson, to the indigenous peoples who first inhabited these lands and the enslaved Africans who contributed to the construction of many of the sites open for touring, Virginia is an ideal place to learn about our country’s beginnings.

The owners of nearly 130 of the state’s most beautiful private homes and gardens will open their properties for tours this April to help raise funds to restore and preserve historic public gardens and landscapes. Historic Garden Week includes 29 tours, as well as bonus gardens at Little Oak Spring and Morven.

Showcased properties range from farmhouses to urban townhomes, and from intimate courtyard gardens to backyard meadows filled with native plants and wildflowers. Each tour offers a captivating selection of three to five private homes and gardens, many of which are open to the public for the first time during Historic Garden Week, along with access to numerous state and national historic landmarks. Prices range from $25 to $75 per person, with a child’s ticket (ages 5-17) available for $15 on many tours, a new option this year.

Some Historic Garden Week tours are walking tours, while others require participants to drive from property to property. If shuttle transportation is needed, it is included in the tour ticket price. Stunning floral arrangements, created by talented members of the Garden Club of Virginia (GCV), feature seasonal flowers and plants native to Virginia, adding another element of inspiration and beauty to the showcased sites.

More than just a fundraiser, this statewide house and garden tour is a cherished springtime tradition for both GCV members, who organize it, and the more than 24,000 annual attendees. Last year, visitors from 42 states and 16 countries traveled to Virginia to take part in what is also the nation's oldest house and garden tour. In addition to funding garden restorations, proceeds support a historic landscape research fellowship program that is building an extensive library of Virginia’s notable gardens. This program celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Historic Garden Week has funded projects at 42 current restoration sites throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, including several connected to the nation’s 250th anniversary. While other organizations were called upon to preserve the homes of Virginia’s Founding Fathers, the Garden Club of Virginia played a vital role in restoring and interpreting the landscapes and key garden features at these sites, as well as at others tied to Virginia's early history. Examples include George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson’s beloved Monticello and his retreat, Poplar Forest, James Madison’s Montpelier, and the Mews at St. John’s Church in Richmond’s Church Hill, the site of Patrick Henry’s famous call to arms.

Many of GCV’s restoration properties are connected to the nation’s beginnings and subsequent expansion, shaping the development of Virginia and the country. Some lesser-known examples include Burwell Morgan Mill, co-owned by Daniel Morgan, a leading general in the American Revolution, and Fincastle Church, one of the gateways to the west.

Visit GCVirginia/historic-garden-week.org for a complete schedule and descriptions of each of the upcoming tours, and the Pressroom, which includes print-ready images and photo credits for featured properties. Tickets and the Guidebook are available beginning February 16.

The First Friday Art Trolley

Hop on for an interactive expedition through the Downtown Arts District! The First Friday Art Trolley is a new way to experience Broad Street during select First Fridays. It’s less about the destination and more about the journey!

When is the First Friday Art Trolley?

September 5, 2025 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
October 3, 2025 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
April 3, 2026 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
May 1, 2026 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Click each of the dates above for more info on what activities will be happening on the trolley.

What is the First Friday Art Trolley?

The First Friday Art Trolley is a free interactive trolley experience during select First Fridays. Taking place in September and October 2025, and again in April and May 2026, each month, passengers can expect something different when they hop on board. From drag trivia to trolley cabaret, you never know what you might stumble upon. Stay on the trolley for as long as you want, participate if you feel inspired, and then hop off when you’re ready to explore more of the Arts District.

Why should I hop on the First Friday Art Trolley?

This is your opportunity to discover more of Downtown Richmond! The Arts District—stretching along historic Broad Street—is bursting with galleries, live entertainment, cultural landmarks, restaurants, and shops that fuel the city’s creative heartbeat. Each month, the trolley spotlights a different organization shaping Richmond’s vibrant arts and culture scene, giving you a fresh reason to ride, explore, and celebrate the city in motion.

Where can I get on the First Friday Art Trolley?

6th and Broad Street Parking Lot (free parking with code)
Virginia Repertory Theatre
Institute for Contemporary Art
Elegba Folklore Society

The trolley makes the loop about every 25 minutes. You can hop on or off at any of the stops and see what they’re doing for First Fridays!

The trolley will make the final loop between 7:30 – 8:00 p.m. and we encourage passengers to get off at their preferred stop during this time.

If you are interested in parking at the 6th and Broad Street parking lot and hopping on the trolley, we anticipate the first pickup time to be around 6:00 p.m. and the last drop-off time to be at 8:00 p.m.

India's Great Mughals: Art, Power, and Opulenc

Immerse yourself in the golden age of the Mughal Empire. India's Great Mughals: Art, Power, and Opulence celebrates the glorious artistic achievements and grandeur of one of history's great empires.

India's Great Mughals includes 200 sumptuous objects—intricate paintings and manuscripts, lavish textiles, architectural elements, metalwork, furniture, arms and armor, dazzling precious stones, and more. Opulent works of art—many made in the imperial workshops—convey the power and tastes of the three most celebrated Mughal emperors: Akbar (r. 1556–1605), Jahangir (r. 1605–27), and Shah Jahan (r. 1628–58). From the tiniest jeweled objects to the monumental wonder of the Taj Mahal, this highly sophisticated and globally connected empire produced treasures of unparalleled splendor and magnificence.

The extraordinary creative output of the imperial ateliers conveyed the Mughals’ great wealth and power. In addition to glorifying the emperors, these diverse artistic productions also signaled worldliness. Descendants of a Central Asian prince, these cosmopolitan emperors presided over a multicultural court that fused Indian and Iranian cultures and regarded the empire's array of languages and religions with great interest. Most notably, they encouraged artistic exchange with Europe, China, Africa, and the Americas, and elevated the importance of cultural and artistic pursuits to new heights.

India's Great Mughals: Art, Power, and Opulence is organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum. The coordinating curator for VMFA is Dr. John Henry Rice, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art.

Windsor Walk: Windsor Farms Walking Tour

Join us for a stroll to learn about Agecroft Hall's neighborhood! Explore the Windsor Farms neighborhood with architectural historian Chris Novelli on this tour highlighting the history and architecture of Richmond’s first comprehensively-planned community.

Windsor Farms was formed during the mid-1920s under the vision of T.C. Williams, Jr., Agecroft’s owner, as a community inspired by English country villages with the amenities of modern city living. Borrowing details from the Tudor and Colonial eras, some residents worked with well-known 20th-century architects like William Lawrence Bottomley to build their homes.

Please note: In the event of inclement weather, the tour will be cancelled.

$10.00 per person.
