As part of a newly announced collaboration, Richmond-based distillery Virago Spirits will partner with the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) to produce a quarterly event highlighting dynamic and ground-breaking people from our history. The events will coincide with VMHC exhibits and programming and Virago Spirits will introduce cocktails that exemplify the subject and era.

On August 14th, Virago Spirits and the VMHC will highlight Clementina Rind from the VMHC “Give Me Liberty” exhibition – the first major exhibition in the US to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. Rind took over her husband’s printing office upon his death, and in 1773 became Virginia’s first female printer and newspaper publisher. She printed Thomas Jefferson’s A Summary View of the Rights of British America and published the widely-read Virginia Gazette. Her printed work was distributed and vigorously debated in Virginia’s taverns and public houses. On August 14th we will explore tavern culture; its importance in the political climate of the day and the beverages enjoyed by our Founding Fathers as they made their way towards the American Revolution.
About the event:
Attendees will enjoy a lively evening of cocktails paired with traditional common tavern fare (snacks) provided by Belmont Butchery.
Each of the 4 cocktail recipes will be presented by Virago Spirits co-founder and distiller, Barry Haneberg.
Learn why Clementina Rind personified a virago and experience the flavors that exemplified the tavern culture of the late 1700s in America.
