The Power of Poison

The Power of Poison

  • Science Museum of Virginia (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Sometimes lethal, sometimes lifesaving, always paradoxical. From a defense against predators to a source of magical strength, poison takes on many different forms. You’ll be infected with new-found knowledge when you explore poison’s role in nature, legend, history and human health.

The Power of Poison features theatrical dioramas, interactive modules, engaging media presentations and hands-on experiences. Wander through Colombia’s Chocó Forest, turn the virtual pages of an enchanted book on toxic plants, investigate evidence to solve poisoning mysteries, hear dramatic stories of forensic detection and explore zombie-making animal/plant duos. Separate fascinating facts from fantastical fiction while navigating toxic twists and turns!

In conjunction with “The Power of Poison,” the Science Museum will feature hands-on programming, demonstrations and events throughout the exhibition’s tenure. Guests can build a 3D mushroom in the Art Lab, learn about Virginia’s venomous snakes, collect some tips to identify poisonous plants and take a look at how the compounds plants produce for protection can become the flavors people enjoy — in the right dosage.

The presence of “The Power of Poison” will make the Science Museum’s annual Science After Dark: Spooky Science (October 17) all the more frighteningly fun. Dr. Michelle Peace will also speak at Sunrise Science (November 7) about the forensic toxicology of diapers, bugs and vapes. More events and experiences will be announced throughout the fall and winter

The Power of Poison is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (amnh.org).

This touring exhibition will be on display October 4—April 19, 2026.

Commonwealth Crossroads: A Celebration of Virginia's Immigrant Traditions

  • Virginia Museum of History & Culture (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Presented by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and the Center for Cultural Vibrancy, join us for a celebration of the richness of artistic traditions brought to Virginia by recent immigrants and refugees.

Experience music, dance, food, visual arts, and ceremonies performed by master artists from around the world now living in the Commonwealth; traditions that were born and nurtured over centuries in places like Mongolia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Cambodia; and that are now thriving here. The power and extraordinary range of cultural traditions that immigrants and refugees bring with them, enriching the Commonwealth in many ways, will be on full display.

This showcase event is being presented as a complement to the VMHC’s new exhibition, We the People: The World in Our Commonwealth, which explores the history and stories of immigration in Virginia from the founding of the United States until the present day.

Artists include:

  • A ceremony of welcome performed in Quechua, an indigenous language of the Andes, by Senora Julia Garcia.

  • Music from Vietnam by the Nguyen Family Band which has performed in major venues throughout the U.S. and abroad; and by Phuong Nguyen a master of the Dan Bau, a single-stringed instrument that has often been called “the voice of Vietnam.”

  • Mongolian music and dance featuring Gankhuyag (GanNa) Natsag who currently serves as Mongolia’s Cultural Envoy; a display of masks produced by GanNa for use in traditional Tsam Buddhist ceremonies; and a performance by his daughter Uyanga, a master of the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle) and one of Mongolia’s most respected musicians.

  • An installation of Alfombra by internationally acclaimed artist Ubaldo Sanchez. Alfombra is a tradition native to the highlands of Guatemala in which colored rice, dried beans, sawdust, flowers, and other materials are arranged to create intricately designed carpets expressing spiritual themes. Marimba Maya AWAL will perform music with roots in ancient Mayan culture, featuring handmade gourd and double keyboard Marimbas, turtle shell, and traditional wooden drums.

  • Dance traditions from the Andes of Bolivia including Suri-Sikuri, an “ostrich dance” with elaborate feather crowns and the music of handmade Zamponas (pan-pipes); and Tinkus, a dance simulating combat in which the dancers draw energy from Mother Earth (Pachamama); performed by the Northern Virginia-based Tradiciones Bolivianos.

  • Performance of Cambodian dance and a display of handmade dance costumes by 2024 National Heritage Fellowship recipient, Sochietah Ung.

  • An Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony performed by Richmond resident Lemlem Gebray and her twin daughters Datta and Akeza Seyoum.

Note: All the artists and presenters named above have been recognized as Masters of their traditions by the Virginia Folklife Program.

October 3, 2025 | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

What is the First Friday Art Trolley?

Stay on the trolley for as long as you want, participate if you feel inspired, and then hop off when you’re ready to explore more of the Arts District.

Why should I hop on the First Friday Art Trolley?

This is your opportunity to discover more of Downtown Richmond! The Arts District—stretching along historic Broad Street—is bursting with galleries, live entertainment, cultural landmarks, restaurants, and shops that fuel the city’s creative heartbeat. Each month, the trolley spotlights a different organization shaping Richmond’s vibrant arts and culture scene, giving you a fresh reason to ride, explore, and celebrate the city in motion.

Where can I get on the First Friday Art Trolley?

The trolley makes the loop about every 25 minutes. You can hop on or off at any of the stops and see what they’re doing for First Fridays!

The trolley will make the final loop between 7:30 – 8:00 p.m. and we encourage passengers to get off at their preferred stop during this time.

If you are interested in parking at the 6th and Broad Street parking lot and hopping on the trolley, we anticipate the first pickup time to be around 6:00 p.m. and the last drop-off time to be at 8:00 p.m.
