In June 2026, to honor America’s 250th anniversary, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture will unveil VMHC IllumiNATION, a breathtaking video art projection that brings the American story to life. Set against the museum’s historic facade, this immersive experience will blend artistic light, historic imagery, and music to transport viewers on a powerful journey through time and place. 

With a thoughtful and honest narrative, IllumiNATION will invite every viewer to see themselves within the fabric of American history—deepening understanding, sparking reflection, and inspiring a lasting appreciation for our shared past. A festive block-party atmosphere will enhance the four-night run of shows. As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the entire VMHC campus will come alive with popular local bands, art displays, cultural demonstrations, community group exhibitors, and crafts and games for the whole family.

This free, outdoor family and pet-friendly festival is held in Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. In addition to select agriculture, handcraft and artisan vendors there will be a variety of tomato-themed children's and family activities and delicious Hanover Tomatoes for purchase, tasting and Hanover Tomato-focused cuisine.

4. There are several parking deck options around the Plaza, as well as. Free street parking is also available in various street locations in the vicinity of the Plaza.

FAQ's
1. No guests will be allowed in before 12noon.
2. Portable toilets will be available on site.
3. Absolutely no illegal substances, illicit goods, fireworks, weapons, guns, knives or laser pointers will be permitted at the event and violators will be held accountable and prosecuted by state and federal law.
4. There are several parking deck options around the Plaza, as well as. Free street parking is also available in various street locations in the vicinity of the Plaza.
5. Your ticket can not be transferred to future date.
6. Your ticket covers your admission into the event only
7. Kids 15 and under are free, but must be accompanied by an adult.

1. No guests will be allowed in before 12noon.
2. Portable toilets will be available on site.
3. Absolutely no illegal substances, illicit goods, fireworks, weapons, guns, knives or laser pointers will be permitted at the event and violators will be held accountable and prosecuted by state and federal law.
4. There are several parking deck options around the Plaza, as well as. Free street parking is also available in various street locations in the vicinity of the Plaza.
5. Your ticket can not be transferred to future date.
6. Your ticket covers your admission into the event only
7. Kids 15 and under are free, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us for our Pick Your Own Bouquet flower events this year! Explore the farm while cutting seasonal blooms as you go!

Check out local farmers, artisans, bakers, and more at our Farmer's Market. If you'd like to come more frequently, we have new Pick Your Own Season Pass or give as a gift for a flower lover in your life (one pass for the entire blooming season).

WHEN: Every Friday

** 4:30-7:30 PM: April 17th - May 1st

** 5-8 PM: May 8th - Aug. 28th

(We’ll also host Monthly Saturday events throughout the blooming season)

***Every Friday we'll have a Farmer's Market featuring local farmers, artisans, bakers, food truck, a bar and more.

When you're finished, we'll wrap up your flowers for you to take home or we’ll add water to a bucket or vase you bring for you to take your flowers home.

Take beautiful photos with the flowers and farm and afterwards, head to the shaded, stocked pond and go fishing, bring a picnic or a cooler, and play yard games for a fun experience on the farm!

In 2026, the United States of America will mark its 250th anniversary. This once-in-a-generation moment—one of celebration, reflection, and aspiration—will be marked with numerous events across the country. Top among that list will be Sail250®, which will bring a fleet of the world’s most magnificent international tall ships and military ships, in an epic peacetime gathering, up the country’s east coast. Primary ports include New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Boston.

The City of Richmond and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture are proud to partner in hosting Richmond SailFest, a Sail Virginia℠ 2026 Affiliate Harbor. Kicking off Central Virginia’s countdown to America’s 250th anniversary, Richmond will host several impressive tall ships along with dockside entertainment and concessions. This free, family-friendly, weekend-long festival will feature ship tours, live music and performances, historical re-enactors, exhibitions of history and art, and much more. The evening of Saturday, June 13, will end with an epic display of fireworks over the James River!

Festival Highlights will include: 

  • Three days of free public visitation and festivities ​

  • Ship tours of three sailing vessels ​

  • Live music and family-friendly programming​

  • Art and history exhibitions​

  • Living history and cultural performances​

  • Food and beverage concessions​

  • Fireworks (Saturday evening only)​
