Hi!
In an effort to keep the fam entertained on a budget this weekend, we played a little ~tourist in our own city~ and let me tell you what, it’s still one of my favorite ways to be out and about.
First, we swung by Main Street Station to admire the clock (or “The Clock!,” as my kids call it). Then we went inside to cool off in the AC while we got our steps in, admiring the trains, of course, and all the pretty nooks and crannies. Did you know there’s a balcony with seating facing Main St? I hadn’t noticed it until this visit, but I made a mental note that it’d be a good place to bring a book and people-watch instead of read some day.
After spending about an hour on that walkabout (public parking in the lot across the street is free for your first 60 minutes, FYI), we headed back up the highway and decided to check out some other transpo at Hanover County Municipal Airport. We popped a squat in a nearby spot (The West End Mom, as always, has some helpful tips here) and caught about six takeoffs and/or landings in the half-hour we hung around.
All morning, we didn’t spend a dime. Until we rounded out the planes-trains-automobiles trifecta and got ourselves a car wash, that is. So, take this as your sign to get out there and just look around! You know we’ve got lots more ideas where that came from.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW
Dr. Lucille M. Brown: The trailblazing educator and former superintendent of Richmond Public Schools passed away earlier this month, but her legacy remains. A Virginia Union University (VUU) alumna, Dr. Brown graduated in 1950 and dedicated over four decades to public education, including 38 years with Richmond Public Schools. She began her career teaching biology at Armstrong High School, later becoming its principal, and eventually rose to assistant superintendent and then superintendent in 1991. In recognition of her contributions, a Richmond middle school bears her name. (WTRV, Virginia Union University)

SOCIAL NEWS
Style Weekly published its annual Best of Richmond issue, celebrating the city’s favorite arts and culture, people and places, food and drink, and goods and services as voted by readers, who cast more than 109,000 votes this year. Some of our favorite takeaways? Sweet P’s is a new must-visit spot; Lolita’s has the most refreshing drinks for sweltering summer days; Firehouse Theatre, 5th Wall, Yes, And! Theatrical Co., and others often schedule pay-what-you-can opps; and Squashapenny Junction has most the eccentric antiquing in the counties. The pub is celebrating its selections at the upcoming Best Fest party on August 15 at the Branch Museum of Design, featuring live music, drag shows, and food from winning restaurants. (Style Weekly)
We’re drooling (again): Slack Tide Fish Co. has opened its doors in the Scott’s Addition Ballast venue, next door to Cirrus Vodka’s new tasting room and the newest Yellow Umbrella Provisions location. The highly anticipated menu takes inspo from global coastal flavors including Thai, Peruvian, Spanish, and American dishes, and its highlights include tuna crudo, shrimp fritters, and soft-shell crab risotto. The restaurant also features a raw oyster bar, serving a rotating selection from diverse regions. And, of course, you can also find plenty of creative cocktails that blend classic inspiration with innovative twists, complemented by a curated wine list and local craft beers. The interior reflects a coastal theme, with plans for an event space and speakeasy-style lounge upstairs, as well. (Richmond magazine)
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — it’s a must-visit spot: The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) recently awarded Taylor Farm Park with the 2025 Innovation in Park Design Award, the first national recognition of its kind for a Henrico park. Selected from 225 applicants, the park stood out for its innovative design, conservation efforts, and strong community input. Only 18 of the park's 99 acres are developed, emphasizing nature-based features like native plantings, treehouses, interactive water play areas, and extensive “all-wheel” recreation options, including a skate park and BMX track, and since its grand opening just last summer, it’s welcomed more than 400,000 visitors. And due to its popularity, Henrico is planning upgrades like more parking, additional shade, and improved water filtration. Formal recognition will take place at the NRPA Annual Conference in September. (Henrico County)
For you history buffs: Andrew Lawler, a local author and journalist raised visiting Virginia’s historic colonial and Civil War sites, has published his most recent book, A Perfect Frenzy: A Royal Governor, His Black Allies, and the Crisis that Spurred the American Revolution. The piece reexamines Virginia’s early Revolutionary period through the story of Lord Dunmore, the colony’s royal governor, challenging traditional portrayals of him as a villain. Andrew also highlights how Virginia’s elite were motivated by land disputes west of the Appalachians, rather than the more commonly emphasized tea tax protests, and how Dunmore’s promise to free enslaved people threatened the social order. His findings reveal harsh, and sometimes historically downplayed, realities of the Revolution. If you’re interested in learning more, Andrew is giving a book talk at the Library of Virginia this Thursday, June 12. (Style Weekly)
Richmond’s bakery boom: We noted a dough-licious trend in Ed 350 and Ed 356, and it seems like we’re not the only ones. Richmond magazine recently did a write-up on some of the city’s latest and greatest spots to join the baked-goods scene, highlighting one, in partic, we’ve got to add to our list. Reports the pub, Jane Lukas, founder of the microbakery Jane Dough, transitioned from a lifelong volleyball athlete to a passionate baker, and after graduating from Loyola University Maryland and briefly trying corporate life, she pursued culinary school in New York and managed a French bakery. During the pandemic, she began baking at home and unofficially started Jane Dough by sharing weekly menus online. Once she relocated to Richmond in late 2020, her rustic breads and pastries became, and still are, regular features at local spots like Chez Nous, The FarmBus, and Richmond Growers Market, with delivery and weekly pickups also available through Celladora Wines.
