Celebrate Juneteenth 2025 at These Local Events

Juneteenth (celebrated annually on June 19) is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved persons in the United States.

While the holiday was initially observed in Texas in 1865, it has since been recognized as a national holiday — and we are grateful for many local opportunities to join this celebration of freedom and liberation here in Richmond this year!

Jubilation in June Festival

Richmond VA Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities celebrates Juneteenth festivities with live music, DJs, performances, vendors, food trucks, and more. It’s free and you don’t have to register to attend, but you do have to be prepared for a good time.

Juneteenth Free Community Day

Admission to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is free all day on June 19! Says the spot, “Start the morning with a special storytime featuring A Flag for Juneteenth with Shauntae Lilly at 10am (in the Library or outside, weather permitting). Be sure to stop and see renowned artist Ron Stokes of the Art Seen live paint in Central Garden. Shauntae returns as her musical persona in the afternoon, Lady Hymningbird, for soulful performances in the Auditorium at 1pm and 3pm, where educational videos will also be playing throughout the day.” The event also happens to coincide with Flowers After 5, which will feature Ban Caribe, an exciting blend of Afro-Cuban, Latin, Caribbean, and Soulful Rhythm and Blues, all held together with pulsating percussion, creating memories of tropical sands, balmy island breezes, and the clear water of paradise.
