Hello, December!

And hello, you! How was your visit? And/or how were your visitors? How many times did someone say 6-7 over your Thanksgiving holiday?

We’re feeling refreshed(ish) over here after a little screen-free time, lots of snacks, and one unplanned snooze through the first ep of All Her Fault. (I’ll get back to it ASAP.) All in all, it was a perfectly cozy breather for us, especially with this recent winter chill settling over Richmond. Now we’re ready(ish) to dive back in to all things Richmond and rock our way to, and around, the Christmas tree. Let’s get goin’ 👇

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including Merry Market happenings, another shipping container bar-restaurant, Sub Rosa reopening, and more.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Christopher Regal: He just self-published a book, and it’s very possible it may be a fit for you or someone you’re shopping for this holiday season. Red Equals Green is about a man from Richmond who’s running for the House of Reps when he survives an attack during a televised debate — causing his polling to skyrocket. The story follows his campaign and is punctuated with Richmond references, landmarks, personalities, and community groups but is still an entertaining read for non-Richmonders, too.

SOCIAL NEWS

We’re about to have a ~sale~ of a time. Merry Market returns to Maymont this weekend as a festive, uniquely Richmond holiday shopping experience, bringing together more than 75 artisans and small businesses in a cheery outdoor setting filled with live music from the Greater Richmond Chorus, a holiday train, photos with Saint Nicholas, food trucks, a kids craft tent, and a Jingle Bar. But that’s not all going on at the Victorian estate this holiday season. There are Wreath Workshops — with limited spots available!! — happening on December 3 and 4, and One Great Morning of Raking, taking place on December 6, will aim to help clear the Japanese Garden. More merch for us! The Richmond Flying Squirrels debuted an all-new set of uniforms for the 2026 season, a refresh inspired by their move into the new stadium. The updated lineup includes home whites with a new Squirrelly Script font, road grays with a modernized Flight Font, and both red and black alternate jerseys that also feature the Flight Font. The team’s logos have been redesigned as well, now showcasing a fiestier, more dynamic squirrel. (Richmond Flying Squirrels)

Here’s how to save on travels abroad. Claude Monet: The Immersive Experience is currently on view at the Exhibition Hub Art Center through January 18. This digital art exhibition uses 360-degree projection rooms, ambient soundscapes, and virtual reality to re-create scenes from the life and work of Claude Monet, including immersive recreations of his Giverny gardens, his atelier, and the world surrounding his most iconic paintings. When you visit, you’ll begin with a short documentary film about Monet’s early career and the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, then move through rooms that simulate Monet’s creative environment, complete with animated seasons, flowing light and weather effects, and a room where his artworks surround you. The exhibit even includes interactive elements like a VR boat ride down the river of Monet’s paintings and an opp to make your own art in Monet’s style. (Richmond magazine)

After five years of rolling around Richmond, 1115 Mobile Kitchen has officially found a permanent home in the Fan! Owner Henry Fletcher says joining the city’s brick-and-mortar dining scene is a dream come true, especially for a business born from deep pride in the city’s vibrant food culture. He credits his loyal supporters for helping turn a daydream into reality, thanking everyone who has tracked down the truck over the years. While an opening date hasn’t been set, the food truck will continue operating as the 1115 team prepares the new space and shares more updates. (Instagram)

Shipping Container Bar-Restaurant, Pt 2. Virginia Transit Co. — or Vitco — is a new shipping-container–built bar, restaurant, and event venue with plans to open near the Sauer Center. Created by the DC team behind Metrobar, the space is getting set up on unused land and will feature a dozen repurposed containers and a decommissioned streetcar, nodding to Richmond’s historic transit system and serving as a cool backdrop for live music. Designed to flex with seasons and events, the 17,000-square-foot modular space will host food and bar concepts run by both the owners and local operators, making way for food trucks seeking a second location and helping fill the void left by the closure of Hatch Local. Vitco is expected to open in early 2026. (Richmond BizSense)

Kick, push, kick, push. RVA Skate School is a community initiative teaching skateboarding to Richmond’s youth. The program offers kids a safe space to learn the “sweet science” of skateboarding, providing guidance, equipment, and mentorship. But beyond simply teaching a sport, it also adds to the broader community and culture, too, fostering confidence, creativity, and connection among its participants. (Style Weekly)
