The Reader’s Guide to Getting Out of the House

BY DIVYA WILLIAMS

We talk a lot about reading ruts, but what about a reading location rut? There’s a certain comfort to the couch in the cold winter months, but chances are… it’s seen enough of you lately. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping—and you and your book deserve some fresh air. Here are some of my favorite places to read in RVA.

Pages in the park: Local green spaces

Richmond spoils us with an impressive amount of green spaces, with 83% of residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park. For scenic lake views, head to Byrd Park. For reading-break people-watching, grab a patch of grass on the VMFA lawn (and you’ll have easy access to AC breaks with the café inside). For more shade and quiet, visit Hollywood Cemetery. Or for proximity to takeout food, opt for Scuffletown Park in the Fan. If none of those fit your specific needs, lucky for us RVAx has compiled an even more comprehensive guide to Richmond’s parks.

In situ: Public libraries

Richmond and Henrico Public Libraries are top-tier. Not only are they incredible resources—offering everything from meeting rooms to Libby access—but they’re also remarkably cozy spaces to escape the summer heat. I’m partial to the Libby Mill Library for its natural light, ample outdoor seating, and proximity to Yellow Umbrella. But they all have their own unique charm, and whether you’re choosing for proximity, size, or armchair-comfiness, you can’t go wrong. If you don’t have your local library card yet, consider this your sign.

Books & brews: Hit a brewery or winery

If you’re like me, you might often find yourself in a “treat mood”—maybe it’s been a long week, or maybe it’s just a beautiful afternoon and you simply deserve a little reward. Sometimes that treat is just enjoying a great drink, outside of the house, solo.

I love Hardywood West Creek for its (clears throat and attempts Chicks rendition) wide open spaces. I’ve also attended a Silent Reading Party at Blue Bee Cider—because sometimes it’s just nice to read alone among company. But plenty of breweries, wineries, and restaurants in the area offer a relaxed, low-key atmosphere where no one will judge you for hanging with your fictional friends over a cold drink.
