BY DIVYA WILLIAMS

Some breakfasts are worth getting up and at ‘em for, so ditch your sad granola bar and romanticize your morning. Start your day off right by making breakfast the main event at one of these tried-and-true Richmond spots.

Bona fide bagels: Baltik’s Bagel

Baltik’s joined the Richmond bagel scene in 2024 with a splash — or should we say a heavy-handed schmear? This award-winning spot features a menu of no-skip showstoppers, but you can’t go wrong with the River City Sunrise, which is their dressed-up take on the classic breakfast sandwich.

Sunday brunch bliss: Uliveto

Gersi is our special occasion go-to, so we were thrilled to discover its sister restaurant, Uliveto, is open for brunch on Sundays. We got the French toast to share as a table, and not one of us can shut up about the raspberry butter it was served with. We got three other entrees, as well — all delicious and practically licked clean — but I can’t access those memories beyond the transcendent raspberry butter. Butter fiends, it appears we’ve become. You’ve been warned.

Deli dreams: Perly’s

Perly’s serves “traditional Jewish cuisine with a modern spin” — and as the small crowd waiting for tables indicates, it’s well worth a wait. Our eyes are usually bigger than our stomachs, but they grow bigger than our whole bodies here. We end up ordering a couple apps, a couple mains, and even a few items to-go, because we can’t make peace with leaving any cravings behind.

Perfect pastries: Sub Rosa

You’ll likely find this little Church Hill bakery with a line out the door and down the street. We’d say we hate to see it, but we know it’s a glowing endorsement that the wait will be worth it. Your choices may depend on how early you arrive, as the crowd favorites tend to sell out fast, but whatever you’re able to get your hands on will be good. We’d highly recommend opting for a seasonal special — from fruit tarts to savory croissants, the seasonal items never miss.

Dependable diner: Eat 33

We found this diner to be surprisingly lively on a weekday at 9 am — in a town with plenty of diner options, this was a major green flag. You’ll find all your typical diner classics here, and then some. This spot features fast and friendly service, good eats, and unbeatable prices.
