Hi, there!
The end-of-year sales are starting earlier and earlier, huh? We need an October Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday now?? Allow me a second to slash through the Big Box noise with Maven Made’s promo return of Final Girls — a quite literally perfectly branded scent for spooky season, featuring notes of leather, black iris, ripened raspberry, and “a whisper of Marlboro Red,” all ode-ing to the bad-bitch Jamie Lee Curtises and Neve Campbells of the world. I just love the idea SO MUCH, and this October, Maven Made is *also* donating 15% of Final Girl sales to Safe Harbor, which provides support to survivors of sexual and domestic violence and human trafficking. I love it SO MUCH MORE! Add to Cart ASAP (and, you know, throw in some Every Body Oil and Cucumber Wondermist. Bad bitches need quality skin care, too.)

Your reading schedule is about to be stacked. The Library of Virginia received a $296,029 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize 100,000 pages of newspapers dating from 1774 to 1963, helping preserve fragile historic newspapers and expand access through Virginia Chronicle and Chronicling America. The project is part of the library’s broader preservation work, which has already digitized 750,000 newspaper pages and recently received another $749,939 NEH grant to conserve and digitize collections related to US independence and Virginia’s early government. Taco ‘bout a(nother) reason to visit Ashland. Center of the Universe Brewing Company and Ashland’s Casa Herradura have teamed up to bring Mexican food to COTU’s beer garden four days a week, with a new 28-foot trailer equipped with a fresh tortilla maker, rotisserie, and fryers. The partnership will include themed events like taco specials and trivia, live music, Sunday brunch and mimosas, plus beer-and-food pairings and the potential for new collaborative brews. Henrico says get the Flock out. Henrico County is ending its contract with Flock Safety, the company behind the automatic license plate reader cameras used throughout the county, citing residents’ privacy concerns and the potential for misuse of collected data. The decision comes as other Virginia localities reconsider their use of the technology, including Goochland County, which ended its contract in August, while Richmond Mayor Danny Avula says the city will reevaluate its relationship with Flock amid shifting public sentiment. Bookmark for those fall-and-winter zoomies. The Little Gym has opened a new Mechanicsville location, offering progressive, milestone-based classes for children ages 4 months to 12 years that focus on physical, social, and emotional development. Programming includes parent-child classes, gymnastics, and sports skills, along with camps, birthday parties, and Parents’ Survival Nights, with founding-family enrollment already underway. Bless! Richmond-area churches welcomed pets of all kinds for the annual Blessing of the Animals, a tradition honoring the Feast of St. Francis and his love of animals and nature. This year, St. Mary’s Episcopal in Goochland County, Redeemer Episcopal in Midlothian, and St. John’s Episcopal in Richmond hosted outdoor services where dogs, cats, bunnies, birds, reptiles, horses, and other pets received blessings. It’s mint to be. Papi’s Creamery, a scratch-made ice cream business from Yorktown with a cult following, is opening a Richmond pickup spot featuring rotating weekly flavors inspired in part by owner Diego Diaz Infante’s Mexican heritage. Unlike a traditional scoop shop, Papi’s sells small-batch pints through limited weekly drops, with Richmond’s first drop launching this week and new flavors released each Thursday. (Axios Richmond)
Don’t forget! This weekend, the Richmond Folk Festival returns to the downtown riverfront with more than 30 performing groups representing musical and cultural traditions from around the world, spread across six stages. The free three-day festival also features traditional crafts, storytelling, food, family activities, and a special tribute to Richmond-born R&B legend D’Angelo. (Richmond Folk Festival)
