Hello!

Barbie is coming to town 🤩 (Arguably more exciting than Santa Claus coming to town, tbh.) I just RSVP’d to the media preview for VMHC’s next limited-time exhibition, Barbie: A Cultural Icon, so this isn’t sponsored, it’s just top of mind and I’m very excited. A pop of pink amidst the upcoming season’s all too prevalent grays that we can only even see until, like, 5 pm because the sun goes down before I’ve even digested my 2 pm bump of Diet Coke?? Don’t mind if we do 💖

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including chocolate chip pancakes, support for local farms, Glow Bars, and more.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

James “Jim” Ukrop: Last week, the former CEO of Ukrop’s Supermarkets died at 89, prompting tributes from Richmond and Virginia figures alike. After helping grow his family’s grocery business to 29 locations, Mr Ukrop devoted his later years to supporting Richmond’s arts, education, downtown revitalization, and early-stage businesses. Community leaders remembered him as a visionary and deeply committed civic leader whose impact extended far beyond the grocery business. (Richmond BizSense)

SOCIAL NEWS

Blessed with bagels. Sunday Bagel, a popular pop-up, has opened a brick-and-mortar location in Jackson Ward, adding another contender to Richmond’s growing bagel scene. The shop bakes its bagels throughout the morning and serves them with cream cheese, plus lunch sandwiches, coffee and rotating specials. (The Richmonder)

October is National Pizza Month, and as a li’l pregame (we like to think), Style Weekly’s got more deets about Pizzeria Delores, the new Scott’s Addition Sicilian-style pizza spot from longtime friends Max Sayer and Jacky Welch. ICY haven’t seen it all over your algorithm lately, the pizzeria specializes in “upside-down” pies with sauce and toppings layered over melty cheese, plus a lineup of specialty combinations and build-your-own options. (And if you scrolled past it up top, here’s our pizza guide for even more ways to celebrate next month.) (Style Weekly)

Reminder to support our local farms. Celeste Farms owner Ian Newell is advocating for a proposed Farm Restaurant Act that would create a clearer, more affordable pathway for small farms to serve food they grow on their properties. The proposal includes two permit options with different levels of oversight, while Celeste Farms is currently operating under the existing regulatory framework after securing a health permit and temporary certificate of occupancy. Rest in peace and pulsars. Chuck Varga, a founding member of GWAR and the artist and performer behind the band’s Sexecutioner, has died at 68 following a battle with cancer. Chuck helped co-found Slave Pit Studios in Richmond and shape the costumes, characters, and visual style that became central to GWAR, later moving to New York to work in film, television, and Broadway while continuing to appear as Sexecutioner over the years. (RVA Mag)

Yet another Richmond fixture. The block of South Auburn Ave next to Babe’s of Carytown may soon be designated “Vicky Hester Way” in honor of the longtime owner, who died last year. Vicky was especially remembered for making Babe’s a welcoming community space and for supporting local organizations and LGBTQ+ initiatives. (WTVR)

ICYMI, Garden Glow returns to Maymont in just two weeks (!!), transforming the grounds after dark with colorful light displays, an illuminated Glow Path, the Japanese Garden lit up at night, and cozy fire pits in Glow Village. Visitors can also enjoy local food trucks, Glow Bars, seasonal treats, and photo opps, while ticket proceeds support Maymont’s historic mansion, gardens, and resident animals. (Maymont)
