Hello over there!

I’m fresh off an afternoon visiting Chapel Island, and while it wasn’t quite like the Barca Bruciata-ness Paige is taking in for us while she’s OOO, it was a sunny day by the water in Richmond after too many chilly spring days IMO, so I’ll take it ✔️ My kiddos drew shapes in the sand, I yelled, “Boat!” every time I saw a boat, and then we moseyed down the street to catch Stone Brewing during its last week of service. All in all, a great little slice of outdoorsy time in our little city. And by the looks of it, we’ve got more sunny opps for that kinda hanging in the days ahead. Let’s get a handle on your plans, shall we?

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including RVA Big Market relocation, community-centered performances, Richmond Ivy winning streak, and more.

RICHMONDER TO KNOW

Little Ray’s Exhibitions: Thanks to this Axios write-up, we’ve got our eyes on the two-toed sloth and other cutie creatures taking up temporary residence at Science Museum of Virginia for the summer(ish). The museum will host Survival of the Slowest, a live-animal exhibition running May 23 through September 7 that features a two-toed sloth, hedgehog, ball python, bearded dragon, box turtle, and Brazilian black tarantula. The traveling exhibit from Little Ray’s Exhibitions explores how slow-moving animals use their traits to survive, with some opportunities for visitor interaction.

SOCIAL NEWS

This is all as full-circle as a doughnut. In a recent profile piece with Style Weekly, Richmond baker Jane Lukas talks about recently opening Jane Dough while entering early motherhood and balancing the rigid timing of sourdough and croissant baking with the unpredictable rhythms of raising her infant son. Is there a Pocket Nanny that helps with both? Jane’s journey from culinary school through pandemic-era sourdough deliveries through working at Richmond restaurants before launching her own pop-ups and bread delivery service has finally brought her to a Bellevue storefront, opening this fall, and no doubt her devoted fans will be waiting in line when she’s ready to dough. We love to see it. Yes, And! Theatrical Co is continuing to expand its presence in Richmond theater through productions, cabarets, and community-centered performances that emphasize collaboration, inclusion, and story-driven work. The company’s recent and upcoming projects include productions like Constellations, Cry It Out, and Pass Over, as well as Narratives: AAPI Voices in Musical Theatre, a cabaret celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander perspectives through personal stories and songs from well-known musicals. (Richmond magazine)

Don’t panic, but the RVA Big Market will relocate on May 16 — to Bryan Park’s Picnic Lot parking area across from the Azalea Gardens for the summer season. The switch-up comes as part of ongoing coordination with the City of Richmond tied to environmental work and upcoming Fall Line Trail construction. Organizers say they are updating the market layout, parking logistics, signage, and vendor placement while emphasizing that the market will remain at Bryan Park and continue operating as a weekly community event despite the latest location change. When you’re in the market for marketing. The Advertising Club of Richmond’s annual Richmond Show brought together more than 200 attendees at The Hippodrome Theater to celebrate standout work across advertising, design, production, interactive media, and student campaigns, with major wins going to agencies including The Martin Agency, Campfire & Co, Familiar Creatures, and Alice Blue Studios. The event also recognized industry leaders and emerging creatives, naming Campfire partner Lauren Stewart as Ad Person of the Year while awarding scholarships to VCU Brandcenter students. We can barely stand the cuteness. Over the weekend, Metro Richmond Zoo announced the birth of a female reticulated giraffe calf, born on May 9 to 14-year-old mother Chrissy and 9-year-old father Bogey after a 15-month pregnancy. The zoo says the endangered calf, which was born in front of guests and staff, is nursing, walking, and bonding with her mother and older sister Clover, marking the twenty-fourth giraffe birth at the zoo since 2000. Last weekend, Richmond Ivy opened their third season with a 3-2 win over Lancaster at City Stadium in front of 5,324 fans during the Kick It Forward Cup, with goals from Maci Landel, Olivia Woodson, and Sunniyah Tucker. One dollar from every ticket sold was donated to local nonprofits, and the match marked the team going 680 days for the team without a home loss. (The Richmonder)

She’s like a rainbow. Elsie Frieda, a jewelry and accessories studio known for its colorful statement pieces made with African vinyl beads sourced through women bead brokers in Ghana, is opening a storefront in Westhampton. The brand has grown rapidly after its jewelry appeared on Netflix’s Outer Banks, expanding from small in-home sales into a nationally recognized business with boutique partnerships, celebrity fans, and a growing product line that now includes hats and must-haves, and we can’t wait to check out the fresh digs — and scoop up some gorg baubles while we’re at it.
