Hello!

Earlier this week, Stone Brewing drank to thirty years in the delicious-beer biz, and all locations — including our very own Richmond gem — celebrated with $0.96 pints. It was just like my JMU days when Cally’s Restaurant & Brewing Co had pints for 75 cents once a week, but this time, I didn’t have a paper on Faulkner due. God bless us all!

If you haven’t made it to Stone recently, let this be your reminder that the Jackfruit Carnitas Crunchflip is *also* incredible and you ought to stock up on the spot’s michelada mix — the latter of which is a warm-weather fridge staple, IMO.

Keep scrolling for RVA’s latest social news, including Earth Day happenings, baklava, an antique shop, and more.

RICHMONDER(S) TO KNOW

Poodles & Pagodas: By way of our apparently very well-curated Explore page (thanks, US!), we happened upon this equally well-curated online vintage shop which also introduced us to Mid Century Morris. Suffice it to say, we have shopping plans in our future.

SOCIAL NEWS

Feeling hot, hot, hot. As temperatures rise across Virginia — why is it already 80+ degrees out there?? —neighborhoods with limited tree coverage can experience temperatures up to 15 degrees hotter than shaded areas. Thankfully, the Cool the City initiative has plans to plant hundreds of trees, particularly in areas with high levels of water-resistant surfaces that contribute to heat and flooding. Research shows that putting tree canopies in place reduces heat, improves public health, and significantly decreases stormwater runoff compared to paved areas. A bill awaiting action from Governor Abigail Spanberger would allow localities to require tree planting in new developments, setting canopy targets based on zoning density. (Virginia Mercury)

The Mother of all celebrations. Spots all around town are marking Earth Day (April 22!) with a series of events celebrating local ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation. For starters, Deep Run Park and the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds will each host free festivals on April 11, featuring music, activities, food trucks, sustainability resources, and recycling initiatives. Then, on April 18, Maymont will host the Virginia Wildlife Trail Grand Reopening, highlighting renovated habitats and the estate’s 100th anniversary as a public space. The Science Museum of Virginia will also hold an Earth Day event that day with hands-on activities focused on natural resources and environmental topics. And, on April 18 as well, Pocahontas State Park will present the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Regatta as part of Virginia State Parks Earth Week, where participants create and race boats made from recyclable materials. Three times the toasts. In more celebration news, a few local breweries are putting on anniversary parties and beer-focused events this month. Triple Crossing will host its 12th anniversary celebration from April 10 through 12 across its Fulton, Midlothian, and downtown locations, featuring multiple versions of its Clever Girl IPA, live music, food specials, custom merch, and a promotional trail map challenge. Fine Creek Brewing Co’s ninth annual Wild & Weird Festival will take place on April 18 and 19 and spotlight mixed fermentation beers with guest taps from 13 Virginia breweries, along with live music and food specials. And on April 18, The Veil Brewing Co will celebrate its 10th anniversary at its Scott’s Addition and Forest Hill taprooms with the release of 10 canned beers, more than 10 barrel-aged bottles, collabs with 10 breweries, guest taps, glassware, and then some. Sustainably slaying. The Veiled Mirror, a new antique shop in the Arts District, specializes in unusual antiques and jewelry dating from the 1600s to the 1930s, with a focus on Victorian-era items that you might call strange, romantic, and macabre. Owners Olivia Lloyd and Kathryn Parker have curated the shop to feature mourning and funerary objects, antique medical and scientific artifacts, Berlin iron jewelry, and pieces of religious and secret society regalia. The biz began online five years ago before expanding to markets and shows, and recently opened its brick-and-mortar location designed to give off a Victorian parlor vibe. (WTVR)

A new spot for endless fun just opened in the East End. Lululand Adventure Park is an indoor adventure and activity center with existing locations in Hampton and elsewhere, and it just opened a Richmond venue last weekend. The park has trampolines, foam pits, slides, and lots more, and you can go for a couple hours with your crew or host an event if you’re looking for a spot to celebrate something fun. (Lululand Adventure Park)

The local coffee shop boom is boomin’. Grit Coffee plans to open a new café next month in Mechanicsville, establishing its third Richmond-area location, in addition to its local cafés in Scott’s Addition and at Libbie and Grove.

And speaking of coffee updates, extremely gorgeous Griffin Coffee & Bakery is all over our Insta feeds recently. The new specialty coffee shop and bakery is bringing Yemeni-style coffee and freshly made pastries to Carytown, and we can’t wait to visit.

Parousia Coffee is *also* all over our algo, with its Outfit and Drink of the Day series. We love a bit, and we’ve definitely got “get an iced matcha here” on our to-do list for the weeks ahead. (Richmond BizSense, Griffin Coffee & Bakery, Parousia Coffee)
