What a week, huh? I know, I know — “Lemon, it’s Wednesday.” So, what a week so far… and universe, help me, if it’s gonna keep going the way it’s going.
First, my kids each came down with varying levels of illness, from needing a hit of Baby Gatorade (our shorthand (?) for Pedialyte) to being sent home from school early to, “Literally, IS it a new tooth or what?!'“
Next, the germs started taking down my husband and me. I’m working through a sore throat now, but I have a feeling my fried immune system is just getting started.
THEN, our car gave out! When my husband tried to get out of the garage at work! And the first tow truck that came didn’t fit in the garage! And the second one just arrived! And it’s 8 pm as I write this!
I guess what I mean to say is: Send your positive vibes my way. It is only Wednesday.

It’s River-City Girl Fall. Richmond musicians BJ Kocen, Steve Bassett, and Justin Laughter have teamed up for The Feal, a new album built from years of collaboration and a shared love of making music without constraints. The album leans into optimism, reflection, and an easygoing, unified sound, with contributions from an impressive lineup of Richmond musicians and beyond. (Richmond magazine)
We fig you not. If you’ve only experienced figs in Newton form, Richmond’s local growers might be able to get you into something even sweeter. There’s a growing community of fig enthusiasts around our area, including a local collector with hundreds of varieties and farms growing everything from Chicago Hardy to Brown Turkey figs. Evidently, figs thrive in Richmond’s hot summers and mild winters, are relatively easy to grow, and can be used in everything from jams and salads to desserts. (Style Weekly)
Run Richmond 16.19 returns from September 11 to 13, for its fifth year, bringing participants together to explore more than 400 years of Black history through a 10.1-mile route, storytelling, and other events. The party also highlights historic sites including Jackson Ward, Tredegar Ironworks, Tobacco Row, and Ancarrow’s Landing, while organizers hope to use the run and walk as a way to connect folks with Richmond’s history and the broader story of the African diaspora. Clear pathways are in the forecast. A former Richmond-area landscaping business owner is getting back into the lawn-care world with a new startup, E-Zee Manufacturing. The company’s first product, the Ez-Plow Mount System, lets commercial stander lawn mowers be converted into snow plows, giving smaller landscaping businesses a way to offer snow removal without investing in separate specialized equipment. The company has already collected about 200 pre-orders and is currently manufacturing the system, with plans to expand its team and eventually produce the snow plows in-house. (Richmond BizSense)
Happy and sad at the same time. Daily Kitchen & Bar in Carytown will close after its final brunch service this Sunday, September 6, marking the end of more than a decade at its W Cary St location. The restaurant says the space will be completely reimagined as a new dining experience, while its Short Pump location at Greengate will remain open as usual. (WRIC)
Three Confederate monuments that remained on Virginia Capitol Square have now been removed, officially ending publicly displayed Confederate monuments on state property in Richmond. Workers removed statues of Stonewall Jackson, William “Extra Billy” Smith, and Jackson’s surgeon, Hunter Holmes McGuire, after the General Assembly allocated $1.8 million in its 2027–28 budget for their removal. The monuments, which were installed between 1875 and 1906, are being transferred to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation for preservation and interpretation. (VPM)
There’s never not a good time to brush up on your safety plans. A two-alarm fire at a downtown Richmond high-rise Tuesday morning forced occupants to evacuate and closed multiple surrounding streets. Firefighters responded to 823 E Main St around 10:32 am and found smoke in the lower levels, eventually locating the fire in a pump room in the lower sub-basement. Seven levels above the fire floor were evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Fire officials said the fire’s location two levels underground, along with the building’s concrete and metal construction, made it particularly challenging for crews to access and communicate. (WRIC)
