Fighting Fish

This spot’s Instagram page has been the cause of many sudden sushi burrito cravings over here. Its atmosphere is fun, and the fish is fresh and offered in generous servings. We’re big fans of the Pepperito — your choice of tuna, salmon, or yellowtail with spicy kani, masago, avocado, pickled red onion and jalapeño, garlic lime, and sesame seeds. (Here comes that craving again.)

Location: 912 N Arthur Ashe Blvd (Scott’s Addition)

Nami

New to the scene, Nami set up shop in the former 3rd St Diner location, giving the interior an updated look fit for some drool-worthy Japanese cuisine. Here, they focus on the flavor of the sea, “serving fresh and outstanding seafood.” Enjoy sushi and hibachi menu items for lunch and dinner (see: the Spicy Girl Roll and the Pink Lady Roll — for starters) and the stellar service and presentation that comes along with them.

Akida Japanese Restaurant

Akida is a Richmond hidden gem but a fan favorite for those in the know. The unassuming spot offers a huge selection of specialty rolls, and if you’re looking for authentic, high-quality, and consistently delicious Japanese eats, this is the local go-to.

Lucky AF

You get lucky AF at this Asian fusion favorite. Master Sushi Chef Hai Truong makes it so there’s something for everyone here, from the traditional rolls to the bento boxes to the poke bowls. Stop by for Lucky Hour from 2:30 to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday (or 5 to 6 pm on Sunday), and snag select rolls for five bucks and under.

Sticky Rice

When you’re craving sushi but also tater tots but also party plans, Sticky Rice is your place. The Richmond staple has been known to have a line around the block for hungry diners (and weekend partiers), and if you’re in the mood for a late Monday night, their Sushi Heaven special offers half off select sushi dishes from 10:30 pm to 12:30 am.

Location: 2232 W Main St (The Fan)

Poke Sushi Bowl

This is our favorite place to grab a poke bowl in the city. It’s consistently delish, consistently fresh, and the servings are so generous, you could split a bowl over two meals. Like, you could. We like the Volcano Bowl — seared tuna and yellowtail, jalapeño, massago, cucumber, hijiki, mixed with spicy mayo — but if you’re looking to get creative, you can build your own, too. Just definitely add seaweed salad (our one true love) to the mix.

Location: 927 West Broad St (VCU)

Osaka Sushi & Steak

When you’re looking for a little variety with your sushi dinner, Osaka has you covered. The menu offers a substantial list of rolls, but you can also enjoy its steak, lamb, and seafood entrees prepared with a pan-Asian flair.

Location: 5023 Huguenot Rd (Greater Richmond)
