The RVA Burrito Shortlist: 5 Local Standouts
I’ve spent the last few weeks treating burrito research like a full-time job so you don't have to. While I’m certainly no authority on the subject, I’ve done the local legwork — and a lot of eating — and here are the ones that lived up to the hype.

The Essential
La Milpa Mexican Restaurant & Market
This unassuming spot was the standout of my research. We tried one regular burrito (marinated pork) and one California burrito (ground beef). Both were exactly what a burrito should be — simple, flavorful, and no frills required. When you enter, walk through the market area to get to the order counter in the back.
Hang around: La Milpa is open until midnight every day, so you can keep the fun going without a location change. Enjoy the patio on a nice day or catch a soccer match among fellow fans.

The Indulgent
Mexican Margaritas Bar & Grill
Some might describe all burritos as indulgent, and to those folks, I say, “Nay.” When you’ve been eating burritos every day on a quest for the best, you realize some are more indulgent, and others are basically salads. This burrito was no salad. It was tortilla-wrapped comfort, and you know what? Hell yeah. I opted for the chorri pollo burrito and was not disappointed.
Make a day of it: From here, it’s a short walk over to Carytown for some post-marg thrifting.

The Vibe-y
En Su Boca
On a sunny day, this patio is the place to be. Whether you're GF, veg, or carnivorous, they’ve got you covered. We went for the ropa vieja burrito and dipped it in their jalapeño queso. Case closed.
Keep it going: From here, you can walk to a Richmond Flying Squirrels game at CarMax Park, catch a show at The Broadberry, or pop next door for a round of bowling at River City Roll.

The Grande
Juan More Taco
Come with an appetite — this burrito is BIG. But on the sliding scale of indulgency, this one was closer to a salad, so don’t let the 14-inch tortilla intimidate you. I got the carne asada (which was maybe the best carne asada I’ve ever had), but there are plenty of meat options and three vegan protein options, too — plus a whole vegan menu if you’re not craving a bigger-than-your-head burrito.
Next stop: After your meal, pop over to the VMFA in just a five-minute walk!

The Smothered
Cochiloco
If you’re looking for something smothered in queso, this is the one. There’s only one burrito on this menu, and it’s all you need. This spot is usually buzzing, so a short wait for a table may be involved — but you can grab a drink at the bar after you place your order at the counter, and time will fly. Bonus points for lots of fun drinks, including NA options!
Extend the evening: You’re in a perfect spot to hit one of many breweries just steps from Cochiloco. Väsen Brewing Company is right across the street, The Veil Brewing Co and Ardent Craft Ales are just one block away, and Brambly Park is just two blocks away.
