Where to Buy Flowers & plants for Any Special Occasion (or Just Because, TBH)
From Easter to Mother’s Day and beyond, the weeks ahead are budding with lots of bloom-worthy occasions. We’re highlighting a handful of our favorite local flower and plant shops where you can take your pick for a partic celebration (or whenever your place just needs a fresh pop of color).
Keep in mind: If you *are* shopping for a special occasion, be sure to check each shop’s hours before you go pick your petals or place an order for delivery. Some locations are closed on holidays, so you may need to plan ahead.

River City Flower Exchange
This co-operative shop features more than a dozen local growers and has had us heart-eyesing over a batch of vibrant poppies that seemed to “literally glow from within.” Alice in Wonderland could never.

Christopher Flowers
This shop’s owner and head designer began his floral education by learning from his mom — “the Flower Lady.” And mother knows best, indeed: The spot’s been flourishing for more than a handful of years, and its fresh-and-bright petals do not disappoint.

Vogue Flower Market
This family florist has been a River City staple for more than 35 years. They offer “the widest selection of fresh cut flowers in the region” and have a DIY Flowers option if you’re feeling particularly inspired when you walk in.

Strange’s
Postal worker Gideon Strange started this flower shop in the 1930s as his side hustle, and it’s since ~grown~ into one of the top 25 Florists' Transworld Delivery members, one of Virginia’s largest greenhouse growers, and one of the largest retail garden centers in America.

Strawberry Fields Flowers and Finds
Strawberry Fields wants you “to feel welcome and leave with a smile” when you visit, and we can confirm from experience that you will. This shop’s charm pops up everywhere, from the doggo team members to the local artisans it features alongside its blooms.

For plants first
PlantHouse
If you’re shopping for a loved one who has an especially green thumb (or even one who simply aspires to have a green thumb), PlantHouse has *lots* of somethings for him or her. The spot offers plants for sale, if you just need to grab and go for a special occasion, but it also offers DIY walk-in terrarium building (check out the upcoming workshop schedule here!) and home decor. Peruse the spacious digs and find just what you’re looking for.

Cross Creek Nursery & Landscaping
Cross Creek Nursery & Landscaping has been in the greenery biz for more than 40 years, so you can count on finding the perfect plant here. The staff is dedicated to working with customers to make sure they find just what they need, and in addition to its garden center, the nursery has a full landscape design department and a florist.

The Great Big Greenhouse & Meadows Farms Nurseries
They don’t call it the “Great Big” Greenhouse for nothin’. This huge nursery has absolutely everything you could need to gift someone, or yourself, the perfect thing for an indoor or outdoor garden. If you’re shopping on a Thursday, check out the farmers’ market before stocking up in the garden center.

Sneed’s Nursery
Sneed’s Nursery has been a Richmond favorite since they opened their doors in 1933. Over the years, Sneed’s has become a local destination for indoor and outdoor plants, gifts, floral arrangements, and landscape design.
