About the Book:

Captain James Cook has been viewed by millions as both hero and villain, but his expeditions were enormously consequential. He was a peerless navigator and cartographer, a fearless and able naval captain, an embodiment of Enlightenment values and scientific acumen, and a figure ahead of his time. Yet the arrival of his ships heralded invasion, disease, colonization, and cultural decimation. Hampton both illuminates the past and shows how events hundreds of years ago not only shaped our world but still resonate today. Hampton traveled all over the world – Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond - during the process of writing the book, and the result is this doggedly researched and mesmerizing account of Cook’s last voyage.
