Experience VMFA’s RVA Community Makers 2026 installation. Led by artist Hamilton Glass, this annual public artmaking project celebrates community leaders, beginning with a community unveiling during Black History Month. Glass’s 2026 art installation will depict this year’s honorees in vivid vinyl and latex painted portraits. His work will be on view in the Cochrane Atrium from February 12 through March 29.
RVA Community Makers 2026 honors three storytellers, community advocates and artists who share the impacts, histories, and voices of an enduring people. They were chosen because they embody and, through their work, celebrate the strength, persistence, culture, and beauty of the Black diaspora. This year’s theme, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants,” is inspired by the VMFA exhibition Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.
Now in its eighth year, RVA Community Makers was created by VMFA and Glass, who collaborate with artists, educators, business leaders, historians, community organizers, and others to celebrate individuals or groups for their positive impacts on the greater Richmond community.
RVA Community Makers 2026 is in partnership with the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia.
