Confluence

  • The Branch Museum of Design 2501 Monument Avenue Richmond, VA, 23220 United States (map)

The Branch Museum of Design proudly presents Confluence, a new show featuring the work of Vietnamese Artist Kenny Nguyen.

Confluence is rooted in the idea that different elements shape one another. The word means “a place where lines flow together,” a reminder of the rivers in Kenny's hometown in the Mekong Delta. They meet, shift direction, and reshape the land. For Kenny, that geography has become as a metaphor for transformation.

Kenny works with hand-cut silk—a material tied to tradition and often seen as delicate, but he uses it to build sculptural forms. Through folding and rearranging, the silk moves across the wall and becomes something structural. Kenny's work doesn’t fit neatly into one category. It’s not only a painting, textile, or sculpture—it sits in between.

Kenny's background in fashion design shapes how he approaches each work. The way the fabric hangs or holds structure is central to how it comes together. He's interested in how both clothing and art can carry memory and identity.

Confluence connects physical materials with personal experience. It’s about how things shift, resist, and eventually settle into new forms.
